I dedicate this book, too late, to Walter B. Lister. He was my City Editor on The New York Post in another time, long ago. He was so incredibly talented in his craft that after him none of us could be real good city editors; there was just no way, no way at all. He got the last interview with Dutch Schultz, because if he had to he could go out and get it himself. I wish he were around to read this book. Just Walter and a girl I knew in those days. He liked Birdye so much that he even considered giving me a day off for our honeymoon, but then he changed his mind. There was some kind of story breaking and he needed a reporter.
